Their films as hilarious as the cinema of the Marx Brothers, as grotesque and fresh as some of the Coen Brothers early films and as immersed in the Polish tradition as the works of the Quay Brothers are a must if you want to know what Polish cinema and Polish humour is all about. Double Bill
THE ASCENDED - Andrzej Kondratiuk created two unforgettable characters in this film, one of his best comedies. One day chance shines its light upon ordinary guys, who win an incredible amount of money in a lottery and decide to spend it on their first ever flight.
HYDRO-RIDDLE - Andrzej Kondratiuks cult absurdist comedy. A superhero comedy modelled on detective films and comic strip parodies, Hydro-Riddle begins during a Warsaw heat-wave, in which the citys water supply has inexplicably vanished.
Sunday 27 March / 2.00 pm / Riverside Studios (book online)
Double Bill
HOW TO GAIN MONEY, WOMEN AND FAME - The film comprises three stories each of which serves a formula on how to get the titular money, women and fame. Janusz Kondratiuk here creates a brilliant satire on human flaws and imperfections.
MARRIAGEABLE GIRLS - Every Saturday eligible single girls from the suburbs arrive in Warsaw hoping to have fun. They hope to break from the monotony of their daily lives, find a guy and perhaps even start a serious relationship... Janusz Kondratiuk at his best!

"From script to screen". This was the main idea of Andrzej Wajda and Wojciech Marczewski when they founded the Film School in 2001. Over 10 years they have produced more than 50 documentaries and short fictions, over 200 students shorts. The films were screened and awarded at the numerous festivals including Cannes, Clermont-Ferrand, IDFA, DOKLeipzig and Berlinale. The School has been awarded twice with the Prize for the Best Producer of Docs & Shorts at the Cracow Film Festival in 2008 and 2010. This year KINOTEKA celebrates the new cinematographic talents that the school has nourished over 10 years of its existence.

Wednesday, 13 April / 7.30 pm / Barbican Centre (book online)
Described as the greatest Polish film of the silent era, and rooted in German expressionism and Soviet Russian cinema, The Strong Man can be ranked alongside other world class silent cinema classics of the period, such as Dziga Vertovs The Man With A Movie Camera (1929) or Fritz Langs Metropolis (1927).
Szaros film was considered to be lost forever, like many other titles that disappeared during World War II , until a copy was found in 1997 at the Royal Film Archive in Brussels and fully restored.
KINOTEKAs Closing Gala screening of Szaros rediscovered classic will be accompanied by a fresh and new soundtrack from one Polands most interesting and promising bands, Pink Freud, exploring different genres from Polish jazz, rock, fresh yass and experimental electronica.

Friday 7 April Wednesday 13 April at Barbican Centre, Mezzaninee
Franciszek Starowieyski (b. in Bratkówka 1930, d. in Warsaw 2009), known by closer associates and friends as Franek or Franio, was undoubtedly one of the strongest personalities in Polish art of the post-war period. His contribution to Polish poster design is believed (especially outside Poland) to be emblematic of the work of the Polish Poster School, although he personally claimed that he had nothing to do with it, whatsoever.
